Disturbance alertsConfirmed vegetation disturbance alerts from GLAD/DIST for 2026, retrieved day by day through the Global Nature Watch Data API, clipped to the reserve boundary and deduplicated on coordinate and date. Each alert covers one 30 m pixel, about 0.09 ha.
ConfidenceAn alert is nominal on first detection and high once later imagery confirms the same loss.
BoundaryField survey polygon of 39,949.6 ha. Protected Planet lists 39,973 ha for the reserve (WDPA site 34805), a difference of 0.06%.
Distance to boundaryGeodesic distance from each alert to the reserve boundary line, calculated in PostGIS.
GridAlerts are counted in a grid of 26 by 20 cells over the reserve extent. Each cell measures about 1.35 by 1.64 km.
Vegetation indexMODIS/Terra 8 day NDVI composites at 250 m resolution, served by NASA GIBS.
WildlifeGBIF animal occurrence records inside the reserve extent plus a 2 km margin, stored locally and refreshed with the alerts. For each record the distance to the nearest alert and the number of alerts within 1 km and 2 km are calculated. Exposure counts exclude records with coordinate uncertainty above 1 km. Locations of species rated vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered are rounded to 0.01 degrees.
Historical loss driversWRI and Google DeepMind dominant driver data, 1 km resolution, 2001 to 2025. Permanent agriculture accounts for 68.6% of tree cover loss in the Bugoma area and shifting cultivation for 18.6%.
LimitationsAlerts lag clearing by up to several months, so the most recent three weeks are marked incomplete. Sightings reflect observer effort. Exposure counts measure spatial overlap with 2026 alerts. GBIF records hold no movement information.
